How to Make a DIY Shih Tzu Canvas Art (Frugal & Heartfelt Craft Idea)

There is something so special about creating something with your hands—especially when it represents someone (or in this case, some fur baby) you love so deeply.
Today, I’m sharing a simple, budget-friendly craft that turned into one of my favorite pieces in the Blog Cabin… a DIY Shih Tzu outline canvas inspired by my sweet girl, Allie. ( who right now is having a tough time as she is on crate rest for at least 6-8 weeks)
This project is easy, affordable, and full of heart—and the best part? You can customize it for any pet you love.
Meet the Inspiration: Allie

Before we dive into the craft, let me tell you about the star behind it.
Allie is my black and white Shih Tzu, and she has been part of my life—and my brand—for almost 14 years. She’s what we lovingly call our “old lady,” but don’t let that fool you… she’s still full of sass and personality. Long time followers know that Allie has a personality that is all her own and she sometimes writes for me on the blog.
She came into our lives when a breeder was looking for a loving home for puppies that were too big to sell, and we were blessed to be that family. And let me tell you—I cannot imagine life without her.
This craft? It’s more than just decor. It’s a little piece of her, captured in art.
What You’ll Need
This project is as frugal as it gets! Here’s what you’ll need: ( add links from my store)
- Canvas
- Printed pet outline (I found mine by searching “Shih Tzu line art”)
- Yarn (I used black for Ally)
- Pipe cleaners (any color you have on hand)
- Hot glue gun
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Optional: Sharpies, pom-poms, ribbon
Tip: You can find tons of beautiful patterns on sites like Creative Fabrica.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Transfer Your Design
Print your pet outline and place it face down on your canvas. Shade the back of the paper with pencil, then trace over the design so it transfers onto the canvas.
This gives you a clean guide to follow.
2. Outline with Yarn
Using your hot glue gun, begin outlining your design with yarn.
- Work in small sections
- Use a paperclip or tool to press the yarn down (protect those fingers!)
- Flip your canvas as needed to make it easier to work
? You’re creating an outline—not filling it in—so keep it simple.
3. Build the Details
Once your outline is complete, go back and add smaller details:
- Cut yarn pieces for facial features
- Use pipe cleaners for eyes or definition
- Add color with Sharpies (like a cute little tongue!)
Don’t stress about perfection—this is where creativity shines.
4. Add Personality
This is my favorite part.
You can:
- Add a bow or ribbon
- Use pom-poms for a fun pop
- Customize colors to match your pet
I added a little pom-pom detail because, honestly, why not? This is where you make it yours.
5. Clean It Up
Hot glue strings will happen (and yes, they are the worst ?).
Use a heat gun or carefully remove them by hand once everything dries.
Why I Love This Craft
This project isn’t just about making something pretty—it’s about creating something meaningful.
You can:
- Make it as a gift for a pet lover
- Create a memorial piece for a beloved pet
- Let your kids design their own
- Customize it for any dog or cat
And the best part? It took about 20 minutes and cost very little.

A Little Reflection
As I sat in the Blog Cabin listening to the rain while making this, I realized something…
Sometimes the simplest crafts bring the most joy.
They remind us to slow down, to create, and to appreciate the little things—like a loyal dog who has been by your side for years.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a meaningful, budget-friendly craft, this is it.
It’s simple.
It’s customizable.
And it tells a story.
And around here at Adventures of Frugal Mom, those are my favorite kinds of projects.
