How To Create a Cozy Home Atmosphere for the Holidays

How To Create a Cozy Home Atmosphere for the Holidays from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

The word “cozy” is one of the best ways to describe this time of year. From warm lights flickering on the Christmas tree, to comfort food, to spending more time with loved ones, everything about the holidays puts me in a comforting frame of mind. But when I set about building this environment for myself and my family, I always find it most crucial to start with the home itself. So if y’all are wondering how I create a cozy home atmosphere for the holidays, check out my to-do list below.

Seal Out the Cold

When the outside temperatures drop and I start to get an itch for the seasonal flare, the first thing I always do is inspect my windows for drafts. After all, you can’t establish a warm and inviting space if a frigid breeze is occasionally sweeping through. Should I find a crack in the seal, I’ll typically fill it in with a bit of store-bought window caulk. But if my windows are leaking all over the place, I’ll see about bringing in a professional to replace them—even if it’s already winter. I find that this task is great, as well, for keeping my energy bills down and just generally making things more comfortable.

Incorporate Comfortable Textures

The next thing I do is fill my home with an abundance of soft and soothing textures. Our sense of touch can trigger the production of relaxation hormones in the brain. It helps us calm down and provides us with a sense of peace after a long, stressful day. So whether it be shag area rugs, throw blankets, or oversized pillows, these things set the stage for a great day curled up by a fireplace. Personally, I prefer to scatter several quilts throughout my home for this purpose.

Light Some Candles

Another thing I do to create a cozy home atmosphere for the holidays is to light a few seasonal candles. Scented candles fill a space with many of our beloved and familiar aromas—making the room feel more reminiscent of the holidays. The candlelight then provides a bit of warm color to the environment and makes it feel more intimate. It’s perfect for spending time huddled together as a family.

Fill the Space With Personal Artifacts

But nothing prepares my home for the holidays like the presence of all my loved ones—in-person or otherwise. Though you may not be able to spend time with everyone you love this year, keeping them all near in the form of pictures or special mementos can also be effective. It also allows you to add more personalization to a space and establish a unique holiday atmosphere all your own. But better yet, I find that it’s a great way to create a feeling of togetherness, even when we’re all apart.
