Guest Post: How to Strengthen Your Support System as a Single Parent

mom and sonWhen you’re very busy as a single parent, it can be difficult to imagine stepping out of your normal routine to grow your support system. Making friends can be hard, especially when it may seem like other parents would rather give advice than be a support system that offers encouragement. Understanding, compassionate parents who are in a similar situation to you do exist out there — it may just take some time and putting yourself in the right places to find them.

Sign Up For an Activity

Single parent families will likely be interested in doing some of the same activities.  You’ve just got to make the effort to be in the same places at the same time. Some of the most powerful friendships you’ll have are with other single parents, because you can understand one another’s situations and trade children every once-in-a-while to give one another much needed rest. You can also share tips and advice for how to make sure your kids grow up to be well-rounded, thriving individuals. Some great activities might include reading groups at the library, after-school sporting events, Boy or Girl Scouts, or even 4-H. These groups will help nurture your kids and give them other adult figures that they can look up to and learn from.

Visit Places Other Moms Go

Spend time at the library, near playgrounds at parks, at kid-friendly restaurants, or in other areas where the child population is high. As moms, you’ll have plenty of things in common to discuss, and the consistent interaction with one another will push conversation to deeper levels.

Visit Online Forums

The internet is ruled by moms, and there are many chatrooms and communities you can be part of to interact, learn, or simply find people who empathize when you run into a difficult parenting situation. Best of all, you can do this on your own time and add it into your nightly routine as a means for decompressing from the day and its crazy activities. If you’re an introvert and need time to yourself in order to feel recharged and happy, online communities are a great way to get the socialization you need and the rest you need. It’s important to also join groups where you can interact face-to-face, but don’t feel bad if you just need a night in. You deserve it.
