When you get a green card, it will last for ten years. Once the ten years are over, it will expire and you will need to renew it. You shouldn’t wait until it has completely expired though, as this can cause a lot of issues. If you can, you should make sure you renew your green card at least six months before it expires.

You can easily renew your green card by making use of an i 90 form. You should make sure you renew your green card within six months of expiration. However, you should also make sure that if your green card has been lost or stolen, that you start the replacement process as soon as possible. If you don’t renew your green card, then you will have to deal with a lot of issues in the future.

Reasons to Renew Your Green Card

As previously stated, if you don’t renew your green card then you will have a lot of issues in the future. So, it’s better to make sure that you renew your green card as soon as it needs doing. If you know that your green card is going to expire in six months or has already expired, then you should make sure to renew it. You should also make sure that if you have lost, damaged or had your green card stolen, then you need to make sure that you replace it.

There are loads of reasons why you will need to renew your card though. Other reasons are that you got your green card before you turned fourteen, but the card will not expire before you turn sixteen. And lastly, another reason why you will need to renew your green card is that it has mistakes on it. If there are mistakes on your green card, then you will need to make sure that you correct them.

How to Apply for a Green Card Renewal?

If you are planning on getting your green card renewed, then there are two ways that you can do this. You can either file it online or mail it in paper format. To renew your green card there are four simple steps that you will have to do. The first thing that you should do is complete the green card renewal form. When you fill in an I-90 Form, you should make sure that you follow all instructions and don’t make a mistake, otherwise, this might cause a problem in the future.

Once this is filled in, you can pay the green card renewal fees. After payment has been made, you will receive a receipt as proof. You will also need to make sure you submit supporting and required documents. When you give your reason for renewal, there will be a list of documents that you will need to submit. Once this has been done, you can sign the    I-90 and file it.

What to Do After You File the Application?

After you have applied for a green card renewal or replacement, you will then get a mailed receipt saying that they have basically accepted your application. They will also post the same notification on your online account. You will also be sent a notification for when you should go to give your biometric information (such as fingerprints, photographs, and signatures). If they need any extra information, they will also notify you as well. When they have made a decision about your application, they will notify you of that as well. When you apply to get your green card renewed, then you should know that it can take up to ten to twelve months for it to be renewed. This is something that you should be aware of if you are planning on leaving the country for any length of time. There is a lot more to renewing a green card and things like immigration, that makes people’s lives incredibly complicated at times. You can check out my personal stand on immigration here though.

  1. Amazing post! I’ve been trying to figure out how to renew my wife’s green card! She came from London but I’m based in the US. We initially had issues since i had a green card myself, but once I received my citizenship, the process became ALOT smoother!

    Thank you
