Great Family Trip Idea Go to The NC Transportation Musuem

train 1The N.C. Transportation Museum welcomes back the Southern Railway 630 steam engine. This visiting locomotive will offer visitors a 90 minute journey back in time to the days before interstate highways, passenger air travel and the hustle and bustle of modern transportation. Trips are scheduled at 9 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. April 13.

The trips are offered through a partnership between Norfolk Southern Railroad and the Tennessee Valley Railway Museum called 21st Century Steam. The program sends steam engines along NS Corporation railroad lines for display and excursions.
Offered at the N.C. Transportation Museum last year for the first time since 1994, the trips will again include a 90 minute roundtrip journey to Barber, N.C. The coal fired No. 630 will head the train, with diesel assistance to complete the trip. These excursions allow families to experience the excitement of travel by rail and riding along in vintage passenger cars pulled by a century old steam locomotive.

The No. 630 was built in 1904 and spent half its life in regular service, pulling freight trains in North Carolina. Retired in the late 1950s, the No. 630 was used for steam excursions in the 60s and 70s, then again retired in the late 1980s. At the turn of the century, the No. 630 underwent a 10-year restoration before returning to the rails under the 21st Century Steam moniker. Get your tickets today.
