Giving Back to Furry Friends

Giving Back Series from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

It is officially December. And you know what that means? It is the start of my giving back series. Each day this month I will post either a way you can give back or profile organizations that give back. So check back every day to check out ways you can give back.  Today I have a post about giving back to our furry friends. If my heart was open to another pupper I would so get one but losing 2 this year, I need a little more time.

The holidays are the ultimate time to bring a four-legged friend into your home. Whether you’re giving the gift of pet parenthood or are on the hunt for your new family member, the holidays reign as one of the best times to welcome a new companion home.

If you’re searching for a furry match, keep this in mind – according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.5 million animals enter U.S. shelters every year. What better way to give back and celebrate the holidays than to give a forever home to one of these animals in need.

But, how do you know what pet is the best fit for you and your family? It’s common to hear stories about pets being sent to shelters because they weren’t the right match for their parents – displaced because he was too hyper or she didn’t get along with the existing dog. A quiz on ScritchSpot, a new app for all things pet, can help not only determine what kind of furry friend is right for you but also actually match you with real pets waiting to be adopted in shelters near you.

The ScritchSpot’s Adopt Quiz presents you with 35 questions that evaluate your lifestyle, personality, living situation and more to find the perfect fit for you. Work all day? There’s a pet who’s used to spending a few hours alone. Like to take long runs? There’s a pet who needs a lot of exercise. Enjoy lounging around? There’s a pet who just wants scritches and to offer warmth and cuddles. (Side note: what’s a scritch? Well that’s when you give your pet a deep, soothing scratch that makes them lean in or even shake their leg).

Adopting is just one option to giving back to those innocent pups and kitties who spend the holidays in a cold shelter. Many shelters offer the option to foster a pet just during the holiday season. You can also sign up to become a volunteer at your local shelter – most are always looking for extra dog walkers and chin-scritchers!

However, you choose to give back this holiday season, keep the wagging tails and purrs of our furry friends in mind!
