Maybe you noticed that you have been yawning too much. If not you, maybe your spouse, children, co-workers, or anyone else you’re spending too much time with has pointed it out. It’s not the usual you, they say. You look too tired lately. And perhaps you even feel it yourself. There are reasons why you may feel that way, and we’ve compiled four reasons that tell you why.

Lacking Too Much Sleep

Whether working from home or seeing a new television series, it’s easy to sit back, relax, and forget about the bed. Then the clock creeps past midnight, and you tell yourself it’s alright to do it once. Sometimes, you think it’s alright to do it twice. But here’s the problem: just doing it once can make you feel tired the next day. It also gets a lot worse when you do it in succession.

The human body loves sleep. If you don’t get enough, you may start to feel slow and drowsy. But for many people, enough doesn’t always mean eight hours of uninterrupted shut-eye. Some may need more, and others need less. If you’ve been feeling tired even after eight hours of sleep, then you might want to adjust your bedtime schedule and see if you need more (or less!).

Dealing with Too Much Stress

Another thing that makes you feel tired way more than you may want to is stress. Stress makes you feel like you want to stop what you’re doing and take a long break. However, it’s far too easy to want to ignore the signs of excess stress, especially if you feel as though there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done.

Stress can increase your blood pressure, making you feel dizzy and exhausted for some time. At worst, it may even lead to a heart attack. But stress also has a good side: it’s your body’s physical limit indicator. Doing what you do—like work, practice, or studies—can take its toll on your body’s physical reserves. When your body reaches its critical point, it releases stress hormones that signal you to stop what you’re doing and take a break.

You can avoid stress by getting enough sleep and resting between long periods of strenuous work. But if you can’t do the former, you may want to take power naps to help you feel energized throughout the day.

Anemia (Or Any Other Undiagnosed Illness)

Since when did you last feel a doctor’s cold stethoscope on your chest? Physical exams are important indicators of your physical health. You could have an undiagnosed disease, such as anemia, cancer, or diabetes, and you might not even know about it without a doctor checking up on you.

Fortunately, a simple, routine blood test can tell you a lot about your current health. They can also be a surprisingly affordable way to examine your health more closely. By getting one of these tests done, you can determine if you have any underlying health issues that could be causing your fatigue. From there, you can speak to your healthcare provider to devise a treatment plan.

Having a Poor Diet

Often, fatigue stems not just from your actions but from your diet, hinting at underlying issues such as insulin resistance, which affects how your body converts food into energy. Some, like energy drinks and coffee, can help you feel awake for a short while before you feel a strong energy crash after a few hours. This can make you feel drowsy later in the day when their effects have worn out.

You could also be feeling tired because you lack enough carbohydrates in your diet. Generally, the body uses carbohydrates like a television remote uses batteries. But unlike batteries, not all carbohydrates work similarly. Sugary foods tend to burn out faster than fattier ones, so you might want to add a bit more fat if you have been feeling more tired after trying out a new diet regimen.

You may also want to eat more protein and drink more water, as well. These help you draw more energy from carbohydrates by boosting your metabolism. As a bonus, protein helps you heal faster from sore muscles after a good workout.

Are You Still Feeling Tired?

You could try all these or you may do none. But in the end, feeling tired always means you need to take care of yourself more. This could be hard, especially for parents — but by finding the right balance, you can get a better start in life and regain your health in your life.
