It’s fall, y’all! That means autumn leaves, pumpkin spice, and… allergies. Between the dust mites and ragweed, there’s plenty to keep us sniffling and wheezing until winter sets in. But we don’t have to let allergies ruin our fall. These effective ways to reduce allergens in your home will help you keep the allergies out and the autumn fun in!

Fall Cleaning!

Everyone talks about spring cleaning, but no one talks about fall cleaning. This is a shame, as fall is the perfect time of year for a deep clean. Not only does it get the house cleaned out before we’re all hunkered down for winter, but it also helps get rid of the dust. That means cutting down on allergens.

The hotspots for dust in most houses are surfaces, carpets, and fabrics, so when you’re creating your to-do list, but those at the top. Cut down on clutter first, then go through and wipe down surfaces and vacuum the floor. Bed sheets also trap dust and other allergies, so washing them is always a good idea. And if it’s been a while, you might want to consider replacing them.

Keep the Air Clean

Unfortunately, dust doesn’t just settle onto surfaces. It floats around in the air too, and that’s not quite as easy to wide down as the countertops. Getting your air clean requires a little more high-tech help, namely an air purifier. If it’s been a while since you’ve replaced the air filters in the house, definitely add that to the list too. That’ll help your purifier not have to work as hard.

Keep Outside Out

Ultimately, most of our fall allergies don’t start in the house. They come from lamb’s quarters, pigweed, and the worst culprit—ragweed, and all that outdoor pollen have a way of creeping into the house. I know I have to set a guard over my front door if I want the pollen to stay out of my house. That means taking off shoes outside or in the garage if possible. It also means keeping an eye on the news and keeping the windows shut on days where the pollen count is particularly high.

Allergies have a way of putting a damper on any season. Fortunately, finding ways to reduce allergens in your home is as easy as tweaking our routine just a little bit. With an allergen-free house, we can really welcome fall in with open arms!
