Best Left Buried by Cindy Hutchins is a science fiction horror story. But not one of those jump in your face horror but more like an eerie story. Hutchins’ writing reminds me of Stephen King. At first I was a little confused because the story started in the past and then leaped into the future. But once I went back and reread the prologue and paid closer attention then it all became cleaner.
Now on to the story. It??? Do you know what IT is? It is the embodiment of evil. It dwells within us all but did you know it can take a life of its own. In this story a fire and brimstone preacher, named Cain, used that to extract his revenge on a woman who spurned his advances because she was in love with another. He decides that he will create IT to hold her as a prisoner for her whole life- because she becomes it’s keeper. The story starts at her death and we meet the child that was left behind. Arliss, her daughter has to deal with all the aftermath of her mother’s decision. She returns to her birthplace to deal with the details of her mother’s death only to release it again.
I loved this story. First and foremost because I had to use my imagination. This book reminded me alot of the movie “The Happening” which happens to be one of my favorite movies. Anything that makes you use your imagination is a good thing to me. The second reason, I love this is because of the setting of the story. As I have said before any story that takes place in my home state is alright by me.
