Deciding to Build a Home

There won’t also be the perfect house available on the local real estate market. When that happens, you have a few choices: you can wait a few months and hope that better listings pop up. That’s possible, especially if you’re searching for houses in the midst of a slow season. If you’re confident that all the houses already built and in your price range will only disappoint you, then you can do something else, and that’s design and build your own home. It’s a lengthy process that involves a lot of decisions, so make sure you’re committed before you begin.

Check out available designs

Typically, prospective homeowners who want to build their own place pick a design from a list of standard models. Different companies will offer different design options. For example, S.S. Steele Homes in Pensacola, Florida, has twenty brick models to choose from, ranging in size from 1,000 to 2,500 square feet. Most people are better off choosing a model that’s been designed by professionals rather than attempting to create their own set of plans. We may think we want a bathtub with his and her basin sinks, and we may want a kitchen island in our cooking area, but that’s a far cry from being able to craft a full set of blueprints.

When you’re designing a home, it’s important to remember certain geographic restrictions will apply. Building a home in Michigan? You can probably include a finished basement without any trouble. But if the home is being constructed in Louisiana or another place with swampy soil, basements are a no-go. Don’t get too attached to the vision in your head; those visions can be a tad unrealistic, and besides, living in an actual home is always better than living in a home that only exists in your mind.

Be patient with the process

Home construction almost always takes longer than the initial projections say it will. It doesn’t mean something is wrong or that the builders are incompetent; it just means the process can be full of starts and stops. A week of bad weather can really set things back, and then there are issues like zoning and permits that have to be addressed. If the time from groundbreaking to completion is estimated at four months, it’s not a bad idea to plan on it actually taking six months. Give yourself plenty of wiggle room; that way, if things do actually go as expected, you can allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised.

In the meantime, start planning what kind of furniture you’ll buy and how you’re going to decorate everything. This is your dream house, so you might as well make it look exactly how you want it to look. You’ll be making plenty of new memories here, but you can still leave room for the old ones by taking your best photographs and turning them into high-quality canvas prints to hang on your walls. The personal touches are what make a house more than just a building where you sleep and eat. It’s not a home until you’ve added your own sense of style and flair to the place.

  1. Taking good care of your home is a priority.  A home, for most people, is a lifetime investment.  You want it always to be solid and in good repair.  It has value.  Keeping it well maintained is necessary not just so you can live in comfort, but also in case you decide to sell it.  Well maintained homes sell much faster than those that are in need of repair.  The other consideration is that you may want to leave the home for your children.  We want our children to have the best and leaving them the family home in good condition will be a blessing for them.

  2. A beautiful home and yard quickly and easily loses appeal with a broken, cracked, or missing formally-paved driveway. Homeowners with a driveways don’t have to worry about spills or leaks from automobiles, lawn tools, or outdoor projects; asphalt driveways easily resist oil and liquid stains.
