Best Camping Movies For This Summer from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

If you are dreaming of camping in the summer already, what better way to get started than by watching some of the best camping movies ever made. While new camping movies are released each summer, there are some that are timeless.

The right camping movie can evoke the summer scent, along with memories of food fights and skinny-dipping. Above all, it can send you hankering for your next trip and bring out your camping gear.

So here’s a compilation to get you started with your planning and keep you motivated:

  1. The Parent Trap

The Parent Trap is one of the most popular and loved films of its time but brings a smile to our face even when we watch it today. It stars Dennis Quaid and a teenaged Lindsay Lohan portraying the role of twins that were separated at birth by their parents.

Fortunately the kids meet at a summer camp years later and realise the full story. They trade places and meet the parents they have yet not met. The romantic comedy is in fact adapted from a book by Erich Kästner and has multiple adaptations. However, few movies are as charming as this one.

  1. Heavy Weights

A hilarious camping movie that is about a weight loss camp It stars Ben Stiller as a children’s weight-loss camp counsellor. Ben Stiller has in fact bought the camp from the original owner who had financial woes. When the children arrive they learn that the camp is taken over by a ruthless and somewhat psychotic fitness guru who charts out highly strenuous regimens. The campers are terrified of his obsession and plan to take revenge in their own way.

  1. Friday the 13th

The film that’s credited to launching the ‘slasher’ genre, Friday the 13th is essentially a camping movie but in the horror setting. The film takes place at Crystal Lake, a deserted campground ill-reputed for its death curse. Disregarding warnings from locals, a bunch of teenage counsellors try to revive the camp. What happens next is predictably scary; the friends get murdered one by one. The film was a massive hit at the box office and spawned a series of sequels and crossover films.

Like Friday the 13th, horror movies are some of the most popular genres in cinema. They often involve suspense and horror, which can make for an exhilarating experience for moviegoers. You can find more horror movies like this one by checking out hellhorror.com.

  1. Camp

Camp is a camping movie that is also a musical comedy-drama. The movie centers around the experiences of teenagers at Camp Ovation, an upstate New York performing arts camp. The campers are all from different backgrounds, each with their own issues but at home with theatre. The movie is well-known as Anna Kendrick’s debut film and also features Robin De Jesus and Sasha Allen.

  1. The Cabin in the Woods

The Cabin in the Woods is a classic from the horror-comedy subgenre. It takes the familiar trope of friends retreating to a remote forest cabin where bad things happen. It accomplishes the rare feat of being funny, weird and spooky at the same time. It is a great parody pastiche of the horror franchise and turns the horror film on its head.

  1. Meatballs

Meatballs is a highly entertaining summer camp film that deals with the wacky hijinks of counsellors and pranks of campers at a somewhat realistic summer camp. Meatballs is widely considered a definitive summer-camp comedy thanks to Bill Murray’s excellent performance. The film was later followed by many sequels that were unrelated to the original plot.

  1. Addams Family Values

Addams Family Values is a sequel to The Addams Family. The plot centers around the family members trying to rescue their Uncle Fester from a sinister-new love interest, a black widow named Debbie who they had hired as a nanny. Many critics and reviewers found this to be superior to its original. The family’s antics at Camp Chippewa, great performances, witty dialogue and subversive humor make it a must-watch.

Some other notable camp movies include Little Darlings, Gorp, Oddballs, Ernest Goes to Camp, Camp Rock, and Moonrise Kingdom. We are sure you have your own favorites too. Time to revisit these camping classics and get nostalgic about the good, old days of camping.
