3 Tips For Planning Major Home Renovations When You Have Kids At Home from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

While taking on major home renovations is a very stressful situation all by itself, if you have kids or other family members at home that you’re also trying to manage in addition to your home renovation, things can get out of hand very quickly. But luckily, with a little planning and forethought, you can find ways to get your renovations done without having your kids get in the way or create additional hiccups for you.

To help you see how you can make this happen for your upcoming reno, here are three tips for planning major renovations when you have kids at home.

Consider The Family Schedule And Routines

For minimal disruptions and distractions for your family while you’re taking care of your home renovations, you should try to plan the biggest projects around your family’s schedule and routines.

Ideally, Erin Zammett Ruddy, a contributor to Parents.com, recommends that you try to do as much as you can during the summer months. While your kids won’t be in school during this time, they’ll be more used to having their routines changed up. You can also use the good, warm weather of the summer to take advantage of time outside or activities outside of the home. Traveling to a relative’s home or taking a vacation will also be easier in the summer if you’re wanting to keep your kids completely away from the renovations.

Keep Your Living Areas Safe

If you and your family are going to be living in parts of the home while the renovations are taking place, you’ll need to take extra precautions to ensure that you keep the living areas safe for your kids.

As part of this, Gillian Berner, a contributor to Today’s Parent, shares that you’ll want to physically block off any areas where work is being done in addition to keeping the air as separate as possible. During construction, dust particles and debris can get into the air and be pushed all throughout the house through the HVAC system. So to keep things like this contained, make sure you close all the registers throughout the house.

Try To Keep The Stress To Yourself

Having renovations done on your home is going to be stressful. That’s just a fact. But while you know it will be stressful for you, it doesn’t have to be stressful for your kids.

To keep this stress to yourself, Jamie Wiebe, a contributor to HouseLogic.com, recommends that you leave your children’s presence if you’re going to be visually upset about something or are going to be having a tough conversation about the renovations. Then, once you’ve composed yourself, you can come back to your kids with a positive attitude that you’ll see reflected in them as well.

If you’re worried about getting home renovations done when your kids will be around, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you make the best of this situation.
