healthy lung month

Breathing in the fresh fall air, watching the leaves change color and fall, getting involved in the excitement of Halloween all make October wonderful. But October is also Healthy Lung Month, a time to think about your lungs and the unseen risks that endanger them.

No matter how clean and well kept your home might be, you could still be unknowingly exposing your lungs to hidden dangers.

Asbestos and Your Lung Health

Asbestos is a natural fiber that was used widely in construction because of its fire resistant properties. Many homes built before 1970 contain asbestos, whether it’s in the insulation, floor tiles, siding or roof. Asbestos is still legal in the United States, so even if you have a newer home, the toxin could have been used in its construction. Asbestos can also be found in older school buildings, car parts, and even various products in your home. Asbestos becomes dangerous when it’s disturbed and the microscopic fibers become airborne. When we inhale these fibers, they latch onto our respiratory system and our body is unable to break them down, which can cause many serious health issues.

Mesothelioma is one example of an extremely serious risk that’s completely preventable. This rare cancer’s only known cause is exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma has a long latency period, so symptoms might not arise for 10-40 years after exposure. Often times, any symptoms of the disease don’t really show until it’s already in a more advanced, harder to treat stage. These symptoms can also seem like other ailments, like the flu, so it’s important to keep a dialogue with your doctor if you have been exposed to asbestos.

Other Dangers to Be Aware Of

Some dangers to our lungs might seem obvious–like smoking– but it’s important to be educated on these health risks since so many are preventable. Being aware of these risks will not only protect our lungs, but also our overall health!

As the cold and dampness of fall begins to set in, it’s important to look out for mold. It grows in humid, dark places like the shower or basement. If you see signs of mold, make sure to scrub it with diluted bleach to ensure it’s killed. Help prevent mold from growing by looking for any cracks or areas in your home allowing moisture in and making sure to dry any wet areas quickly.

Radon is another big danger for your lungs. This odorless, colorless gas can build up in homes and buildings over time becoming extremely dangerous. It’s the second leading cause of lung cancer overall, and causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year. Every home should be tested for radon, since it’s very common to find radon in the home. Radon tests are simple, don’t cost a lot, and most importantly could save your life!

It’s also important to take precautions when cleaning around the house–even when cleaning up health risks like mold. Most supplies contain strong chemicals, and even “green” products aren’t the best for your lungs. Be aware of how much of the cleaning solution you are using–the less, the better–and make sure to keep the room you’re working in well ventilated.
