No poem has ever received the kind of immediate and overwhelming response that Poe’s “The Raven” did when it first appeared in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845. It made Poe an overnight sensation (though his great fame never brought him much wealth) and the poem, a powerfully haunting elegy to lost love, remains one of the most beloved and recognizable verses in the English language. The illustrations that accompany this Top Five Classics edition are reproductions of the renowned French artist Gustave Doré’s steel-plate engravings created for Harper & Brothers’ 1884 release of THE RAVEN. It would be Doré’s last commission as he died shortly after completing the 25 illustrations in January 1883. His illustrations would become famous in their own right, evoking as they do the lyrical and mystical air of Poe’s masterpiece.

RL: Rufus and Ryan Say Their Prayers

AFM Reading List

The other day I reviewed a cute little book about a boy and his monkey. Today, I am happy to tell you that I Rufus and Ryan have another book this time it is about saying their prayers. In Rufus and Ryan Say Their Prayers by Kathleen Long Bostrom, the concept of being thankful for what you have is taught. Here is a brief summary of the story.

Rufus_and_Ryan_Prayers-330

When Ryan says his prayers at night, Rufus is right by his side. Ryan’s prayers – giving thanks, asking God to bless his family and just sharing his day show that talking to God is something anyone can do. This charming duo will encourage little ones to pray.

I will have to say that I have fallen in love with these books. Even though my children are way past the stage of board books, this book can be used to encourage thankfulness. I had to laugh when I first got these books, because Gracie wanted to immediately read them to our dog Allie. This reminded me of the characters in the book.

I like how prayers are portrayed as a normal routine in everyday life. Too often we forget to pray, so getting in the habit will help that forgetfulness. I also like how Ryan first starts his prayers off with a question to God- asking him if he had a good day. Then he thanks God for all his blessings like ice cream cones. But he not only shows what he is thankful for but he also asks for help with things that he struggles with like listening, Finally he asks for blessings for everyone,

His prayers are so sweet that I am reminded that we all need a childlike quality when we pray. It is the simple prayers that are the best as well as the sweetest.

I am very pleased to announce that I am a Pledge ambassador. Being an ambassador for Pledge means that I will be tracking my before and after experience using the Pledge Floor Care Wood Line of products. I will admit that I do not have a lot of wood floors in my house but those I do have I want to maintain. I have awesome mix of wood, carpet and tile one day I hope have all wood floors so there will be no more carpet stains for us.

Having two teenage daughters and a preteen you can imagine the amount of spills that happen by my girls as well as from their friends. Just like every typical teenage my girls forget to clean up their messes some of the time but all of the time. Have you ever noticed how sticky soda can get when it is left on the floor after it has been spilled? Pretty sticky and sometimes it is hard to get up without a little bit of elbow grease.

Here are some facts about Pledge Wood Care products.

Pledge® FloorCare Wood Concentrated Cleaner gently removes dirt and grime while restoring floor’s natural shine. It’s made with almond oil to moisturize wood and restore its natural beauty and it leaves a fresh scent behind. The concentrated formula makes up to 16 gallons of cleaning solution.

Pledge® FloorCare Wood Squirt & Mop is a ready-to-use formula requiring no dilution before use. Its advanced formula removing dirt and grime that builds up over time to maintain a floor’s natural finish with no dull residue. It reveals wood’s natural beauty and leaves a fresh citrus scent behind. Also available in gallon size.

Pledge® FloorCare Wood Trigger is a ready-to-use formula designed specifically for spot cleaning. Its advanced formula cleans, shines, restores and protects—with no dulling, oily residue—leaving a fresh citrus scent behind.

Pledge® FloorCare Wood Finish goes beyond what you get from other floor cleaning products—this premium finish provides a beautiful, transparent, long-lasting shine andstands up to the wear of heavy traffic without yellowing. It can protect hardwood floors and help prevent dirt from getting trapped in floor grooves and indentations, making cleaning much easier.

So within the next month I will be taking the Pledge to Pledge Challenge and sharing with you my readers.

  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 Tbsp. water

  • Stir in ketchup and Worcestershire sauce; cool.
  • Unfold 1 pie crust and place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  • Spread mustard evenly over crust.
  • Stir 2 cups of cheese into meat mixture and spoon onto the center of the crust, leaving a 2 inch border around the edge.
  • Unfold the remaining pie crust and cut a jack-o-lantern face into it. This would be great for your kids to do.
  •  Place the cut out crust on top of the meat mixture.
  • Crimp all edges of the crust to seal.  You can use a fork for that.
  • Using cut out pieces of crust, create a “stem” for the top of the pumpkin.

  • Bake 5-10 more minutes or until golden brown.

If you are looking for a cute children’s storybook that teaches about church and how you should behave then boy do I have a book for you, Rufus and Ryan Go To Church by Kathleen Long Bostrom.

RufusandRyan-273x300

Just read the summary.

Ryan loves going to church, and he loves taking Rufus with him. Ryan guides Rufus, and young readers through the service, the singing, the Bible stories and the prayers. This charming duo will take the mystery out of church and encourage children to talk about the experience.

First let me begin by saying that this book made me a little sad because it reminded me of when Gracie would carry Beary, her stuffed teddy bear, around with her everywhere she went. Now Beary is lucky to even be taken out of Gracie’s bedroom. But in another way, it made me remember all those sweet times Gracie had with Beary.

I loved how this book is a board book, that way parents can start teaching their children at an early age how to behave not only in church but in other social situations as well.

I loved how Ryan carries Rufus, his stuffed monkey around with him and that he shares all of his experiences with him.

All in all it is just a cute children’s story that any kid would love to read or listen to whether they attend church or not.

Halloween Tips to Help You Celebrate in Style

AFM Halloween Tips style

AFM Halloween Tips style

Now that Halloween is just a few days away, here are some quick and frugal tips to make your Halloween even more enjoyable and less expensive.

  • Host a costume swap party. You know there are some costumes that your kids outgrow so why not trade it in for a new “used” one. Hosting a costume swap party will not only save you money but it will also give an excuse to have a party with your friends.
  • Make sure to stock up on reflective tape. Send your cute little trick treaters off with reflective tape attached to their costumes and shoes.
  • Paint an old frame black and hang spider webbing from the side. This will be a fun photo opp for your visitors. When they ring your doorbell, have them hold the frame near their face for a quick pic.
  • Make deviled eggs and put a sliced green olive in the middle for eyes.
  • Pick up some white pumpkins and with sharpies draw ghost faces on them. This is something that you can do with preschool as well as school age children. While you drawing faces, you might also want to draw faces on cups as well. Then you will be ready for any visitor that may stop by.
  • If you are hosting a pre-Halloween party, pass out glow sticks or necklaces as party favors for children to use when they are out collecting their treats.
  • If you plan on going hunting for treats plan a route to take and stick to it. Never go into an unknown neighbor.
  • The last tip I can give you is to have a backup plan just in case it is pouring down rain. Check to see if there are other locations that may host trick or treating inside. Because let’s face it, it never hurts to have a backup plan.

So these are my tips, do have different tips? Share and let’s all be safe this Halloween season.

If you are a fan of Christian literature or the Amish Literature than boy do I have a book for you? The Secret Keeper by Beverly Lewis is an awesome work of Christian Fiction. Just read the summary and find out for yourself.

secret keeper

With her love for all things old-fashioned, Jennifer Burns has often been told she’s an “old soul,” but no one is prepared for the young woman’s decision to set aside her modern life in favor of the Old Order Amish world. Yet Jenny does exactly that, adopting Plain dress and settling in with Samuel and Rebecca Lapp while she works as a mother’s helper for the bishop’s wife–a far cry from her former job as an x-ray technician.
The people of Hickory Hollow are curious about the beautiful young seeker among them, one handsome Amish man in particular. But he is not the only man vying for Jenny’s affections, and Jenny faces many challenges in the Proving time the brethren have set for her…challenges of the heart, as well as the spirit.
Will Jenny’s secrets keep her from the peace she longs for? Or will they lead the way home?

When I was reading this book, I found myself wondering if I would make the choice that Jenny makes to leave the modern world to live in a world without technology and modern conveniences. I will admit that it would be very hard to make those sacrifices. Heavens know, I can’t live without my iPad, iPhone, computer and television. In fact as I am typing these words I am watching a Betrayal (my new obsession) on my iPad.  Too many times we make fun of those that different, shouldn’t we embrace those that are different and learn to become different ourselves.

I cannot say that I yearn for the simple life like Jenny did because I sometimes get caught in the ways of the world. I have always loved the simple ways but as Jenny finds out that she has to learn to stand by her own convictions. She has to learn that protecting the ones she cares about makes it hard sometimes to be a part of the society that she longs to belong too. Jenny learns that she may not be able to make a life as a plain woman because of the secret she keeps.

This book has everything that you can imagine. It is strong in Christian references, a love story in the making and an awesome study of the differences in the Amish culture.

I have always been a big fan of Beverly Lewis. This book does not disappoint, in fact I think it is one of the best stories she has ever written.

Allie’s Corner: Halloween Safety Tips For Dogs

AFM Allie's Safety Tips

AFM Allie's Safety Tips

Hi folks,

Allie here, with an important public service announcement about the scariest time of years for us doggies, Halloween maybe fun for the kiddies but for us your four legged friends not so much. Here are some tips that will help you help us have a stress free Halloween.

  1. Give me lots of exercise and playtime before those little ghosts and goblins show up at the front door. 30 minutes of exercise would be more than enough to tire us out so that we are more relaxed when those visitors arrive.
  2. Give me a quiet room, a warm blanket and a nice cozy bed any day over being out there among those creatures of the night.
  3. Make sure that I am doorbell trained, so I know not to bark when those little tricksters ring the bell.
  4. Dogs like treats too. Buy me a new toy to play with just for that day. I love getting presents so I know your furry friend will to.
  5. Never leave any of your furry friends alone with your small human friends especially those human friends that are in costume. This is for our safety as well as our human friends as well.
  6. Be strict with those holiday sweets. No matter how much we beg for that piece of candy, cookies, cake or chocolate -DO NOT let us have them. It is not good for us and it can make us sick.
  7. Lastly, if you have candles or a jack-a-lantern with a candle inside make sure we are far away from them. Our tails like to wag so it better to be safe than sorry.

So hopefully these tips I have provided will help your fur babies as well as your human babies have a happy and safe Halloween.
