Things To Consider When Placing a Newborn in a Crib

Okay, y’all, safe baby sleep is a hot topic. Before you panic that you’ll suffocate your baby somehow, let’s look at a few things to consider when placing a newborn in a crib. For first-time parents, it can feel almost defeating navigating all the dos and don’ts. So relax—your baby will be fine!

Excess Objects

Those cute little plush security blankets with animal heads are great for playtime but not so great for a baby’s crib. And sometimes, when the baby isn’t in the crib, we set things in there for the time being and forget about them.

Until your baby is a little older, they won’t have much control over their arms and legs and will kick and squirm around during active sleep stages. So it’s vital that y’all remove any excess objects like toys and blankets from the baby’s sleep space before placing them in there.

Appropriate Clothing

If you’re worried about your baby getting too cold or too hot during sleep, consider something like a sleepsuit or swaddling. Avoid blankets and layers at all costs.

A sleepsuit goes over their footie pajamas and provides an extra layer, but safely. And swaddling is meant to mimic the comfort and safety of the caregiver or womb space; it also tucks in those squirmy limbs.

Bedding

When it comes to crib bedding, you want to keep things as simple as possible. We know you can’t add any objects or blanketing, but ill-fitting sheets and the wrong size mattress pad can also be cause for concern. A few tips for choosing bedding are choosing firmly fitted sheets and a waterproof mattress cover.

Environment

After spending a lot of time and energy preparing a nursery, now it’s time to consider where the baby’s going to sleep. Sometimes, it’s best to room share with your baby to provide them an extra layer of comfort and security. Since it isn’t ideal to bedshare, having them nearby could make night feeds easier.

It’s also essential to think about the temperature of the room. It’s encouraged to keep the space around 67-69 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything more or less could be too hot or too cold.

With all the things to consider when placing a newborn in a crib, it can feel like a lot of regulations and stress. But safe sleep is essential for you and them, so following through with some of these steps can ease your mind and help you get better rest.
