Crib mattresses such as the Colgate crib mattress provide just the sleeping environment that your child needs. But how much sleep should your new-born actually be getting?

In this article, we are going to take a look at how much sleep babies need. We are also going to give you an idea of what a baby’s sleep pattern looks like. It’s important to remember that all babies are different so the information we are providing is a general guideline.

What can you expect when you first bring your baby home?

If you have just brought your newborn home from the hospital you should expect them to sleep for between sixteen and twenty hours each day. This may not sound too bad but babies do no necessarily sleep when you want them to. More often than not you will find that your child wakes up often during the night.

Although the situation can vary from child to child, you should notice that from the age of around three months, your baby starts to sleep for longer periods during the night. The total amount of sleep that they need is still fairly lengthy, at around fifteen hours each day.

Gradually, the amount of sleep a baby needs reduces. You should find that by the time your child is around six months old they will only need to sleep for approximately fourteen hours each day. This figure should decrease to around thirteen hours by the time your baby reaches the age of one.

Hopefully, we have given you a better idea of how much sleep a baby need when they are newborn and as they grow. But what about the way a baby sleeps?

The sleep patterns of a newborn baby

You can see that a newborn baby needs a lot of sleep, but they do not get that sleep in the same way that adults do. Babies do not sleep for long periods at a time; they get all the sleep they need in the form of shorts spells of sleep. These naps are normally no longer than a couple of hours.

If you are having to cope with a newborn constantly waking up at night this sleep pattern can be very stressful. The good news is that it does not last. As you child grows they are able to sleep for longer periods of time without waking to be fed. The older your baby gets the fewer times they need to take a nap. Normally, by the time a child reaches the age of six months, they only need a couple of naps every day.

You may find that when your child approaches their first birthday they stop wanting to take a nap. The problem is that they are often still tired at some point during the day. It’s a good idea to provide them with some time to just be quiet and relax; you may find that they drift off into a nap as a result.

Hopefully, you have found this information useful in determining approximately how much sleep your baby should be getting.
