The phrase ‘it’s the thought that counts’ seems to have been replaced by ‘the more expensive, the better’ and commercial card, and gift companies are cashing in by producing more, and more products that you don’t actually need, or want. Yet, when it comes to the crunch people still find it hard to leave their wallets at home. Instead of paying for overpriced chocolates, flowers that die in days or expensive perfumes you could make, draw or build something that shows someone just how much they mean to you.

We believe that actions always speak louder than words so why not whip up a batch of delicious sugar cookies? These homemade heavenly bakes are easy to make, just mix butter, sugar, and flour together in a bowl, add in an egg and you’ve got cookie dough! They can be easily customized, think individual flavors and colors such as their favorite NFL team, and once cooled you can write on the icing with pretty frosting pens to make them super special. Don’t just present them on a plate, create a cute cardboard cookie box, or decorate a mason jar with glittery red paper hearts, red and white ribbon and candy cane name tag.

It’s lovely being able to leave little messages for each other in the morning, isn’t it? Well, now you can make them extra special by being able to write on photo frames. These heart-shaped picture holders are ideal for displaying wedding, holiday or family snaps and look cool too! To make them all you’ll need are some wooden frames, heart shaped’s best, but you could pick any, some chalkboard spray paint, yep that exists, some sandpaper and chalk. Grab the frame and coat both sides with the paint, be careful not to get any on you as this stuff can stain and then leave to dry for 24 hours. Create an aged look by rubbing sandpaper over them once they’re dry before cleaning them with a cloth to wipe off excess dust and paint specs. Remember to brush white chalk all over them, rubbing it into the wood as this will set the board before you place your photos inside. Then, decide what you want to write, for today at least, and scribble it onto the frame!

While strictly not a totally DIY project if you know that your partner can’t get through the day without their morning cup of coffee then this is the one for you. If you’re creative you could have a go at making them a mug, beginners pottery classes are fun places but we have to warn you it’s a lot harder than it looks. Or you could buy a plain or patterned one from Blanche Porte, as they have a fantastic homeware range then have your pictures lasered onto the mug by a professional. Why not pick out two sets? Thanks to color change technology when the cup’s cool you see one image, but when a hot liquid touches the edge it’s magically replaced! These are great presents because they can be used again, and again while reminding your husband just how amazing your family is.
