How to Keep Your Home Clean and Dog-Friendly

How to Keep Your Home Clean and Dog-Friendly from North Carolina Lifestyle Blogger Adventures of Frugal Mom

Indoor pets can be a huge blessing for any family. It’s been proven that dog owners are typically happier and healthier than others, and there’s nothing better than curling up on the couch with man’s best friend. But what should you do about the mess? Dogs tend to shed, and some struggle with house training, too. And, of course, there’s all the dog “stuff” to deal with! Here are some handy tips for keeping your home clean while also staying dog-friendly.

1. Stay on Top of Grooming

Make a regular grooming schedule for your dog and stick to it to prevent excessive shedding. While you can always vacuum regularly to help keep dog hair at bay, grooming keeps the hair off your pet so your dog never sheds in the first place. As a bonus, your pup will look and feel like a million bucks!

2. Buy Dog Mats

Your current doormats may work well for people, but dogs often require something a bit more heavy-duty. Muddy paws are a huge problem for indoor dog owners, but you can keep them away by wiping your pup’s feet before he ever steps foot in your home. You might also consider keeping a towel by the door to dry your pet off after long walks in the rain or snow.

3. Exercise Often

Your pet is most destructive when she’s bored, so make sure you give her plenty of exercise. Indoor pets may need more frequent walks than outdoor pets. You might also spend time each day playing ball or frisbee together. A tired dog is usually a happy dog, and you’ll see fewer bite marks on furniture and railings if you keep boredom at bay.

4. Make Dusting Easier

There’s no way to avoid this one: You’ll likely need to dust more often when a dog is in the home. But that doesn’t mean you should spend hours dusting each and every knickknack in your home. Instead, spend just a few minutes each day giving a quick swipe to the surfaces used most in your home. You might also invest in a dusting wand to make the job even easier.

5. Buy the Proper Tools

While you’re purchasing the dusting wand, you might consider adding a few other cleaning tools to your arsenal. Consider getting a fabric sweeper to remove hair from your couch, a cordless vacuum for cleaning up quick messes and a stronger corded vacuum for deep cleaning (one with a pet hair attachment is ideal). The proper tools make any cleaning job that much easier.

6. Keep Pet Clutter Out of Sight

While it’s impossible to keep all signs of a pet out of your home, there are ways to hide pet clutter. You might buy dual-function furniture with built-in pet storage options. You can also find pretty leashes, food bowls and other pet accessories that blend well with your existing decor. You can also stash pet medications, like bravecto tablet for dogs, away in a basket or cabinet to keep them out of sight.

Keeping your home clean with an indoor pet can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s well worth the effort. If you prep your home in advance and spend just a bit more time cleaning each week, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a clean home and more snuggly time with your pup!
