How to Choose the Right Storage Unit
Picking the right storage unit is about more than just choosing a size you think will accommodate your belongings. Two units the same size can vary massively in terms of features and the facility itself. And if you’re only picking your storage unit by size and nothing else, then you’re highly likely to make the wrong decision.
To avoid this, use the following tips to help you choose the right storage unit.
Check Security
A facility’s security setup varies more than people expect. Good features to look for include gated access, individual codes, cameras covering the entrance and hallways, and units with their own locks rather than shared ones.
From here, find out if there is on-site staff or a manager who checks in regularly, as this means someone’s actually paying attention rather than the site running unattended for most of the day. If a facility can’t clearly explain how they monitor the site or gives vague answers when you ask, this is a red flag you should be wary of.
Confirm Access Hours
Some self storage facilities offer 24-hour access; others lock the gates at a set time each evening and won’t let you back in until morning, no exceptions. This matters a lot, especially if you need frequent access to your belongings. For some, regular hours aren’t a problem, but if you’re storing business inventory, for example, and need to grab stock frequently, having restricted hours will be a massive problem. Ask directly rather than assuming, as access hours can vary massively and will impact price too.
Look Into Climate Control
Not every storage unit is climate controlled, and not everything needs to be. However, if you have items that genuinely do, such as furniture, electronics, photos, documents, or anything wooden or leather that can warp, mould, or even degrade in a unit that can swing between extreme heat and cold across the seasons, especially over a long storage period.
If you’re storing anything that is sensitive to temperature or humidity, ask specifically whether the unit is climate controlled rather than assuming it’s included by default, especially as some facilities only offer it on certain units or at an extra cost that isn’t always advertised upfront.
Compare Price Per Size
Price differences between facilities aren’t always about the unit itself. Sometimes it’s about the location or added security; sometimes it’s just an added markup with nothing extra to justify it. Before you make a decision, check out some self-storage facilities offering the same size and features rather than just going with the lowest price or one that comes up in a search. Price doesn’t always reflect quality, so it’s worth doing your research to make sure you get it right.
Ask About Insurance
Most facilities will have some type of insurance coverage, but it won’t always cover everything you need it to, especially if something is damaged, stolen, or destroyed. Some home or renters’ insurance extends to cover your belongings in storage, but not all do. Always ask the facility what coverage they have in place and what isn’t covered. Then you can take out a separate policy if you feel it will be beneficial.
