A sinus infection can make you feel miserable. There are the sinus pain and pressure that’s bad enough. Then you might have stuffiness or nasal drip, or alternations of both. It can even make you feel achy all over. There are different causes of a sinus infection. Most often it comes from allergies or a cold. Your allergies get inflamed and in some cases with this. The sinuses are hollow areas within the bone that surround the nose. They produce mucus that drains into the nose, which serves a useful purpose. But when your nose gets swollen, such as when you’re sick, it can cause pain and a variety of other symptoms like a cough, post-nasal drip and headaches.
Before you turn to the antibiotics or other prescriptions, some home remedies just might do a better job anyway. My doctor always recommends steam as the best treatment for sinus infections. Here is more info on that as well as some other home remedies for sinus infection.
Hot vapor/steam – You can help moisten the sinuses with a steam of hot water vapor. You can do this in the shower, or you can boil a pot of hot water and then drape a towel over it and breathe the steam in. Allow it to cool a bit first so you don’t risk burning yourself. You can add menthol or eucalyptus to your boiled water or your shower steam for added benefit.
Keep hydrated – It’s amazing what just being well hydrated can do for your body. It seems like such a simple thing, but it’s so crucial. When you drink a lot of water, you keep your sinuses hydrated as well. You want everything to be moist in there to avoid swelling and infection. So drink up and drink often.
Get spicy – If you ever heard the saying that hot food will “clear your sinuses,” there is some truth to this. Hot and spicy foods can help clear the nasal passages which help your sinuses. If you feel congested or that your sinuses and nose are blocked, some of your favorite spicy food might do the trick to clear that right up.
Now that you have these home remedies for sinus infection, you don’t have to suffer in silence or rush to the pharmacy. You can try to treat it yourself at home. If you are on antibiotics or other prescriptions for some type of illness or infection, you can still use these home remedies with it to get maximum relief.
