Family Fun on a Budget: Making the Most of Your Free Time for Almost Nothing

Family Fun on a Budget

Taking your family for a trip to somewhere like Disneyland is something that is beyond many household budgets, but even when you are working with a modest amount of money to spend, there is no reason why you can’t have some family fun on a budget. Some families are able to benefit from windfalls through something like TAC road accident claims, but in regular circumstances and without some compensation to fall back on, there are numerous ways to enjoy some great weekends with the kids, without breaking the bank.

Back to nature

A great idea for some quality family time together that the kids will enjoy, is to explore the great outdoors by organizing some picnic days. Ditching the technology and leaving the PC games at home might not prove popular with the kids when first suggested, but more often than not, they really enjoy themselves once they get the fresh air in their lungs and enjoy a family picnic. Introduce some outdoor games that you used to enjoy as a child and once you get into a regular routine, your kids will probably be suggesting where they want to go next for their picnic day.

Lots to do in the city

If you live near to or in a big city, there is a fair chance that there are a number of free attractions that you can arrange to visit. The majority of big cities have some museums and historic locations which you can visit for free. There are also going to be some open spaces to explore like a public park or some other places of interest that you may never have been to or not visited for a long time if it is on your doorstep.

Introducing your children to the city can be a lot of fun and educational at the same time. It can also be done on a small budget with a number of attractions either free to enter or charging a small fee in some circumstances.

Consider volunteering

Volunteering ticks a lot of boxes. It allows you the chance to spend a family weekend together whilst doing something positive for your community or a specific cause, which also teaches your children the importance of helping out where you can. Volunteering can also open up the opportunity to learn a new skill if you get involved in a building project or help out with the catering at an event. You can normally search for community projects in your area and find a list of suitable options to consider.

Consider a staycation

Staying at home will save you money for sure, but it doesn’t have to be boring  if you make special plans for your staycation.

For your staycation to work you will need to plan the weekend and fill your time doing some things together. This could be anything from having a movie night and playing some games, or tackling a big project like decorating a room together. You could even pitch a tent in the garden and spend the evening by the campfire and enjoying a family BBQ.  Whatever you decide to do, if you are on a tight budget, you can still have plenty of family fun.
