For lots of people, cruises are a dream holiday. With all of the amenities of modern cruise ships, they’re like resorts that do the traveling for you, letting you take in the sun and sights of the sea without the kind of hassle other modes of travel tend to bring with them.
But for just as many people, they seem like an unattainable dream, especially for a family holiday with kids to room and feed. But in fact, there are ways to go on a family cruise that are affordable for any budget. Most cruise companies offer free food and activities from certain venues aboard, with premium options carrying a price tag, and there are a few ways to save money on the trip itself. Here are the big ones:
Look into Local Departures
One thing that keeps cruises out of many price ranges is the price of many people is the cost of getting to the port of departure in the first place—cruises around exotic seas tend to leave from exotic places, leaving to many people flying somewhere to get aboard. If you’re lucky enough to live within driving distance of the coast, look into cruises that leave from somewhere more accessible. One of the best parts about a cruise is that the facilities aboard mean you don’t have to travel far to have a great trip.
If you don’t live near any seaports, consider a river cruise. These are generally cheaper than sea cruises, and can let you get a close look at gorgeous town and countryside vistas without ever leaving the ship.
Snap Up Late Bookings
Though it means you can’t spend as long planning your trip, you can save a bundle on cruise tickets by taking late bookings. Cruise companies equip their ships to cater to a full complement, and anything is better for them than an empty cabin, so as the departure date creeps nearer and nearer the asking price per person plummets. Finding these deals is easy, too, thanks to companies like Bolsover Cruise Club who collate them all in one place.
So if you’re looking for a family holiday that offers something different or just a little more than you were expecting, a cruise really can be the way to go.
