Creative Things You Can Do With Ice

What’s one of the best ways to cool off in the summer heat? Making treats and projects with ice, of course! Looking for some inspiration? This list of creative things you can do with ice should be enough to get you and the kids started on some fun (and tasty) activities for the summer season.

Chill Your Favorite Drink

Make your average cup of lemonade, water, or juice tastier by adding some fresh, cold ice. If your kids are constantly complaining because their drinks are too warm, this is the perfect way to encourage them to stay hydrated. For some creative ice, try using an ice tray to make uniquely shaped ice cubes or infuse them with some fruit or flavor. Especially if you’re using your fridge’s built-in ice maker, always use filtered water for your ice, as this will make it tastier and healthier.

Blend Some Yummy Smoothies

Are normal drinks a little too boring for your taste? Smoothies are another delicious treat you can make with ice cubes. Grab your blender, pick your favorite fruits, and add a thickener like milk or yogurt. If you use fresh fruit, add some ice to the mix to make your drink cold and thick. My favorite flavors are strawberry banana and mango pineapple. Give it a try, y’all!

Conduct a Science Experiment

Kids are naturally curious, which makes science experiments a great type of activity to do with them. One fun experiment to try is making baking soda ice cubes. All you need is some baking soda, vinegar, water, and an ice cube tray. Combine the baking soda and water, then freeze the ice cubes overnight. When the ice cubes are ready, take them outside, add some vinegar, and watch as they fizzle! This is a great way to teach your kids about chemical reactions as well.

Make Ice Cream in a Bag

This next idea is one of our family’s favorite summer activities—making ice cream in a bag! You’ll need just a few ingredients: milk, sugar, vanilla, salt, and ice. You’ll also need two Ziploc bags, one large and one small. Fill the small bag with your milk, sugar, and vanilla and seal it well. In the larger bag, place your ice and salt, then the smaller bag filled with ingredients. Seal the large bag and shake vigorously for several minutes. And there you have it—a delicious bag of homemade ice cream! Your kids will be able to enjoy their tasty treat, as well as the satisfaction of having made it themselves.

These creative things you can do with ice will keep you and your kids entertained and well-fed for the entire summer. If you exhaust all these ideas, try coming up with some more ice-related ideas on your own! Stay cool and have some fun this summer.
