5 Ways To Help Your Home Combat the Summer Heat
Living where the summers get hotter than a jalapeño, I’ve gathered some tricks to keep my home cool without cranking up the AC. These tips have been lifesavers. If we’re not careful, summer can be harsh, especially on our wallets. Follow along as I share five ways to help your home combat the summer heat.
1. Cool the Air, Not the Room
Don’t discount the humble ceiling fan. Turning on the ceiling fans in a room helps promote air circulation. If things are just a little too hot for comfort, I find that a room will feel a few degrees cooler with the help of a ceiling fan.
2. Block Out the Sun
My window treatments aren’t just for show. I swapped out my old curtains for energy-efficient ones with a high solar-reflectance value that keeps the sun’s rays from heating my space. The look of my home hasn’t suffered, and I can see the change in my energy bill. It’s made a huge difference!
3. The Power of Shade
Trees aren’t just nature’s filters; they’re your best friends against the heat. Planting a few near your home can significantly lower the temperature inside. Plus, I love lounging in my backyard under my tree canopy.
4. Smart Air Thermostats
My smart AC setting starts by setting the thermostat to one temperature, then allows the temp to rise a little while I’m not home. Programming your smart AC to take a break when you’re away gives your AC a chance to rest and provides lower energy bills. Y’all, if you don’t have a smart thermostat, I highly recommend investing in one.
5. Keep the Heat Out
Air drafts are notorious for letting heat in. I spent an afternoon caulking and weather-stripping my home to seal off the nooks and crannies. After I checked around the windows and doors, I went into the attic to ensure the attic insulation was intact. Attic insulation helps manage your home’s temperature, so if it’s damaged or inadequate, it’s time to replace it.
Pro Tip
Don’t neglect your windows; I used those double-glazed windows with UV protection film.
Implementing these strategies will result in cooler homes—a win-win. If you’re constantly tangoing with the thermostat, try these ideas to help your home combat the summer heat.
Summer isn’t going anywhere, but with these tips, you don’t have to go anywhere either! With a few changes, you can stay within the comfort of your cool, energy-efficient home.
