Why More Homeowners Are Investing in Outdoor Living Spaces

Many homeowners are starting to see their outdoor spaces as an extension of their homes rather than a separate part of the property. If you’re part of that group, here’s why it’s worth investing in a comfortable outdoor living space you can truly enjoy.

Outdoor living spaces increase your usable square footage

When you create an outdoor living area, you increase the amount of space you have for daily activities. Instead of pursuing room additions, you can add more living space right in your backyard. For example, a patio with comfortable seating can become a favorite gathering spot for movie nights and weekend meals outside. This extension of living space works exceptionally well when you have parties or holiday gatherings and need to reduce crowding.

Patio covers won’t break your budget

A patio cover is one of the most affordable upgrades you can get for your home. It will protect your patio furniture and grill from the sun and harsh weather while providing you and your family with shade. They cost far less than traditional expansions and can make your backyard look great.

Sunrooms are the perfect blend of indoor and outdoor living

A sunroom gives you more exposure to natural light and comfort. You can open the windows to let the full spectrum of sun into the room or keep the windows closed if it’s raining or too hot. Sometimes it’s nice to just sit in a sunroom and read a book or work on your laptop with a clear outdoor view. If you have pets, they’ll want to spend time in the sunroom as well.

Porches and porticos add character

When your home has a nice porch or portico, it boosts curb appeal and makes your guests feel great when they enter your home. A simple covered entryway will protect you, your visitors, and your packages from rain and harsh sun. When you have a comfortable place to sit on your porch, you’ll be more likely to spend time outside enjoying nice weather.

You can transform your backyard easily

You don’t need a huge property or lots of money to transform your backyard into something amazing. All you need to do is create separate areas for dining, relaxing, and recreation. This can be done with furniture and a simple gazebo, along with intentional landscaping. For instance, you can separate a kid’s play area from an outdoor dining area with shrubs and pathways bordered by mulch and native plants.

If you don’t already have a dedicated play area for your kids in the backyard, that’s a great place to start. Kids need to spend more time outdoors away from screens, and having a fun backyard makes that more likely. Depending on how old your kids are, you can get them a playset with swings and monkey bars, or add a portable basketball hoop to an area with concrete. Even a simple sandbox can provide your kids with a fun reason to engage outside.

Outdoor kitchens are affordable and add value

Maybe you already eat some of your meals with family outside, but adding an outdoor kitchen can make the experience of backyard dining even more fun. There’s something special about cooking outdoors that you can’t experience inside. Small indoor kitchens tend to be isolated, and the cook is generally cut off from mingling with guests. When you have an outdoor kitchen, everyone can connect easily, and the cook won’t feel left out.

You don’t need to go all out and buy the fanciest, biggest kitchen you can find to get value. All you need is a basic grill station with a prep counter and some storage space. If it’s in your budget, you may want to get an ice maker or a sink, but that’s not necessary.

If you choose to sell your home later, having an outdoor kitchen will make your home more appealing to potential buyers and can increase solid bids.

You can build value outdoors without overspending

When adding an outdoor living space to your home, you can start small and expand over time. You don’t need to perform major renovations to create a space outside that you can enjoy. For instance, you might start with a patio cover and eventually build a sunroom.

Creating an outdoor living space is an excellent way to spend more time outside and increase the value of your property. No matter what type of space you build, it will be an upgrade that you and your whole family can enjoy for years.
