In moderation, beer can make you smarter…
…though, alas, the type of revelry that often accompanies St. Paddy’s Day might make you think otherwise. (Remember we said “in moderation.”) Surprisingly enough, beer is more than calories and good times. According to our friend Charlie Bamforth, who’s head of the food sciences department at the University of California in Davis, “beer really has a lot going for it. Moderate consumption cuts the risk of kidney stones, gallstones, and late-onset diabetes, and improves cognitive function. And studies from the United Kingdom definitively show that moderate intake reduces the risk of osteoporosis.”
Hold that thought while we pour an ice-cold brew. Is one beer healthier than another? “India pale ales and American hoppy ales are highest in silicon, which is good for bones,” Charlie says. “But I always say, choose one you enjoy. If you drink beer responsibly, there will be benefits.” We like Charlie’s point of view.
If you don’t have plans after the parade and feel like extending the flavor, try this tasty chicken recipe from AllRecipes.com. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
