3 Everyday Essentials Commuters Must Have

Commuting to the city or to work can be tricky to prepare for in the morning. I often worried about sleeping through my alarm to travel to work, a doctor’s appointment, or somewhere in the city. Then, I would rush out the door and forget my essentials for commuting. That had to stop once I started my family. Now, I plan weekly routines and pack my bag ahead of time to get myself and the kids ready to seize the day. Here are three everyday essentials commuters must have.

Chargers Go a Long Way

When I first started working, I didn’t need to rely on a charger. Today, a charger can go a long way, especially if I’m away from home for a while. My kids have also proven it—they use their smartphones often and almost always take a power cord when leaving the house. Sometimes, they’ll bring a portable charger.

I have found myself using one often, and it’s saved me plenty of times. If none of y’all like using a plug-in charger, I recommend a portable one. It’s easy to carry and store, so you can access it whenever needed.

Have Your Transit Pass Ready

Working in the city taught me that the public transit system is the best way to get around. My small town isn’t too small for me, but the city always proves it’s not large enough. I still get lost around there, but I make do with my transit pass.

These days, I can access my transit pass on my smartphone and easily add cash for the train or bus at any time. If only taxis took the transit pass, then commuting wouldn’t be too bad, especially if I missed a bus or train. I recommend keeping this pass in your commuter bag or wallet for safekeeping.

Get a Good Backpack

Everything in the city goes by faster. Everyone walks and talks at a quicker pace. During every greeting, it feels like someone is looking to close a deal. No one in the city has the time to stop, even to ensure they have everything in their bags before departing from the office or a restaurant.

I remember chasing someone down because they dropped their phone. They got it back, but that event made me wonder what would’ve happened if more stuff had fallen from their bag without realizing it. Then, I started thinking about needing a new bag. And y’all, I did need one.

I searched around and found that my backpack wasn’t a good size—it was bulky and had some holes, and wearing it tired me out. I started looking into other signs it was time for a new backpack. As I predicted, one of the signs is if it’s falling apart. The bag I have now has lasted much longer, and I still enjoy using it when commuting to the city.

As y’all learn about the everyday essentials commuters must have, get to know your route more and plan accordingly. I think y’all will like commuter life more once you have what you need to get through each day.
