How To Make A Fabulous Tree From A Dress Form

Dress Christmas Tree

While looking through my Facebook feed one day I came upon several pictures of a Christmas tree made from a mannequin and I immediately started planning out how I would create such a project using Lola. I imagined it was going to be absolutely awesome and so easy to do. Boy was I wrong.

First I didn’t notice that all the trees I saw were made from Mannequins that had a cloth upper body. Lola is all wire. Next most Christmas tree come in sections these days and not in individual pieces. All the trees I looked up on pinterest were made from the trees that were pre lit and came in sections,

So here is my journey brings. Or should I say our journey because I couldn’t have done this without the help of my big strong husband. I don’t have the upper arm strength to take the sections apart so that I can have individual branches. So my husband did these after work over several days. Taking the branches off was not an easy job to say the least he had to untangle the lights and then using wire cutters and pliers take each branch off. Here is something that he did without knowing that actually helped me, he bent the ends of the wire. So after I had all my branches I was then faced with another problem.

What to do for the top?

I tried several of my shirts and dresses as well as my girls but I couldn’t find anything that I liked. Finally it hit me why not try the red dress that I bought years ago for Maddie to wear to her 8th grade prom. ( She is now 20 years and can still fit into that dress).

The red dress was just dressy enough that it gave it a look of class and the red really brought the dress to life.

The Bottom of the dress

Unlike the other dresses I had seen on Pinterest, I could just thread the tree through. Lola  is all wire, but because my husband had bent the end of the dress I was able to fluff and spread out each branch so all I had to do was hook the branch onto her wire form. It was that easy to do. In all honesty I think that part was easier than some of the ones I saw on Pinterest.

The Decorations

This tree has special meaning to me as I did it to honor the memory of my dad and my sister, so for the decorations I kept it simple. I chose a simple strand of white lights. I also used silver and white ornaments to give it a little pizzazz.

I was totally surprised with how well it turned out and it now stands in the corner of my dining room. So tell me do you have any fun projects planned for this Christmas? Check out my Pinterest Christmas Crafts board for more interesting projects like this.

  4. I’m intrigued but being a traditionalist, this would be hard to get use to as my primary tree. I may be able to dabble with something like this for fun or for my daughter’s room … like a princess tree but I dunno. I’m still on the fence. It’s beautiful but I’m on the fence. Does that make me strange?

  5. Such a wonderful DIY project where you could involve kids as well to make it so much fun. Simple yet creative & I love how good it has come out finally. Would love to try out one such at home.
