If you are planning to go on a vacation, one place that you should consider visiting is New England. New England is located at the northeastern end of the United States, and it consists of six states, including Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island. It is sometimes referred to as the “birthplace of America”, because it was home to some of the earliest settlements in North America. New England is one of the most preferred travel destinations on the US east coast, because it has many great attractions to offer. Other than a rich historical and cultural heritage, this region also boasts an amazing diversity of natural landscapes and excellent shopping and dining opportunities. Here are a number of interesting things that you can do on a New England vacation.

Acadia National Park, Maine

The Acadia National Park is one of the most beautiful natural sites in New England. Encompassing an area of 47,000 acres, it offers a wide variety of landscapes for you to explore, ranging from rugged coastal headlands to crystal clear lakes. In this national park, you can hike, camp or scale mountains, or spend a relaxing afternoon on the beach. If you are lucky, you may catch sight of peregrine eagles, black bears or moose. There is a free Island Explorer bus that makes a number of stops along Acadia’s Park Loop Road. Click here to learn more about Acadia National Park.

Cog Railway, New Hampshire

The Cog Railway is located in Mount Washington, and it is the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world. At this attraction, you will get the chance to ride on a diesel or biodiesel locomotive to the summit of Mount Washington, the highest point in the northeastern part of the US. The locomotive travels at a speed of about three miles per hour, and it has to climb at an angle of close to 40 degrees during certain parts of the journey. It moves through lush forests and provides breathtaking views of the White Mountains range.

Mystic Seaport, Connecticut

Mystic Seaport is a living museum that showcases New England’s rich maritime heritage. It transports you back to the time when wooden-hulled ships ruled the seas. This beautiful seaport has three main attractions, namely, exhibit galleries, a working preservation shipyard and a recreation of a 19th century New England coastal village. You can explore the village on a carriage and visit the Fishtown Chapel, a period lobster shack and a cooperage.

Stowe, Vermont

A trip to New England will not be complete without a visit to Stowe. If you try to imagine the perfect postcard picture of New England, you may very well be envisioning Stowe. When you are there, you can visit the famous Stowe Hollow Bridge and enjoy great shopping and dining on an old-fashioned Main Street. This town is located only three hours north of Boston.
