Lent Recipe: Grilled Cheese Squares

grilled cheese crescent

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. It is a day of fasting and the first day of Lent. During this time Catholics abstain from  meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays on Lent. If you are a Catholic family like we are sometimes it means being creative with meals. There is just so much a fish a person can eat. So I am always looking for ways to experiment with no meat recipes during the Lenten season. I came across a new take on a grilled cheese. It was a bacon and cheese crescent sandwich. So I adapted it to where there is no bacon in the sandwich. Gracie was happy because she refuses to eat bacon.

Grilled Cheese Squares

These crescents are easy to make and are a new take on an old standby a grilled cheese sandwich.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings 5 people

Ingredients

  • 2 packages crescent rolls
  • 8 slices cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375.
  • Roll one of the packages of crescent rolls out into the bottom of a pan. Pinching the rolls together so there are no seams. I used my Pampered Chef stoneware bar pan for this one, but you can use anything.
  • Place the slices of cheese on the top of the crescent rolls.
  • After you have placed all the slices of cheese on top of the layer of crescent rolls, add another layer of crescent rolls on top.
  • Place in oven at 375 for about 10-15 minutes.
  • When you take them out cut them with a pizza cutter and enjoy.

These grilled cheese squares are so gooey. They would be perfect as a meal in itself or as a side dish with a bowl of tomato or vegetable soup. So tell me what ways do you create a meal without meat?
