Midweek Moment: Master Suite or American Pickers Retreat

It was a far cry from my television favorites, American Idol, America’s Got Talent, or Little House on the Prairie. Wanting to be a “cool” mom and desiring more fun time with my thirteen-old son, I finally gave in to his request, jumped onto his futon with my jar of peanut butter, a chocolate bar and Bugles in hand and curiously scoped out the reality T.V. show he was watching.

I’ll admit I was a little interested with what seemed like a big treasure hunt as the men scoured the country’s junkyards, barns, and basements for hidden treasures. They combed sheds and outbuildings, and at one point stopped to pick up trash lying beside the road. Even more fascinating, was the collectors and hoarders who had inherited what appeared to look like humongous, cluttery collections of nothing but junk! There were boxes and crates, things dangling from the ceiling and out the windows, tons of papers, magazines and plenty of dust …….

Let me grab my thick wooly socks because I am about to step all over these hot pink painted toes. Pedicure, I just might need a pedicure…. Just being candid, there was a time in our marriage when I shamefully admit our master bedroom looked like it could have been a dumpster diving American Pickers Retreat. Often, I would find myself retreating there to fold the laundry, balance the checkbook or check emails. Then I would climb in the bed with files of office paperwork, nestled between an Ipad, a cell phone, To Do lists, community volunteer work , a kid or two, or even magazines. Frazzled and exhausted, most of the time I would just fall asleep. You know Clutter has a way of making you feel tired, hopeless, and out of control.

Several years ago while listening to a minister, I was literally convicted while  he shared with the congregation how the master bedroom should truly be the most beautiful relaxing room for a husband and wife. He proceeded to share how it “should be romantic, free from clutter and a place of refuge from a busy day.” It is the one room that should be inviting for my spouse. Just being honest, I had spent months and lots of money making sure my kids rooms were fun and inviting for their friends but next to nothing on our Master Bedroom. Accepting the challenge, I went home and slowly begin to put some steps in place for turning our master suite into a small oasis. I was amazed at what I could do just by clearing away the clutter, adding a few pillows, scented candles and just for fun I added a jar of my favorite dark chocolate truffles at the end of the bed. GIRLFRIEND, there is something relaxing and unwinding when you add in a little chocolate to the equation! (Psssst… I have heard DARK chocolate is good for the sex life…….Ahem!)

You know what, our little sanctuary has now become a place where we both can unwind from daily stresses. The most important thing is it created a sense of calm and inspired romance. You see I craved intimacy but ladies let’s just get for real, how can you find intimacy among all that clutter!

I’ll admit there are days when it’s a challenge to scurry about to fix the bed and straighten the room, but then I remind myself that my husband & I and most importantly our marriage deserve this Oasis.

Ladies share with us your designing tricks and favorite tips that have made your Master Bedroom Suite Inviting.

  1. Your bedroom should be the cleanest room in your home. Many of you still use yours as a garbage/clutter disposal for the rest of the house. If your bedroom is clean and clutter free, then it becomes an inviting haven for building your relationship with your spouse. The best gift you can give your children is a strong marriage. This is true whether your children are 2 or 40 years old.
