So Long Nick

Yesterday, we were privileged enough to be in the stands for Nick Millington’s last game as a Railhawk. It was announced earlier in the day that he was retiring in order to pursue other non soccer related activities. I was able to speak to him for just a few minutes after the game and my opinion of him did not change. I have always thought of him as being a gentleman. From his gentle smile and friendly demeanor he has always been one of those gentle giants on the field. One of the good guys that you can point out to your kids and say what a great model he is.

Even last year, when he was not playing in a game he was still sitting in the stands with a soccer ball under one of his feet.

I was sadden that he sat on the bench during the game on Saturday night not able to log minutes in his last game as a Railhawk, but then I thought that is what Nick is all about. Maybe he only announced his retirement that day was because he did not want a lot of fanfare. But I can say for one, my family and I will miss seeing him on the soccer pitch.

In our brief conversation, I asked him if he was sticking around the area and he said yes he was. But he would be like us watching the game from the stands.

So, so long gentle giant with the quick smile whose sportsmanship  and class will follow you wherever you go. As a parent I want to thank you for being a positive role model for our children and as a fan, I want to thank you for being so gracious with your fans accommodating their requests whenever you could.

Good Luck in your future endeavors and hope to see you in the stands cheering for the Railhawks real soon.

Here are a few pictures that we were able to snap with him throughout the past 2 years.

And finally I had to get a picture with Nick. Don’t you just love that smile. Once again thank you Nick for being a player that was so inspiring. Good Luck in your future endeavors.
