4 Key Ways that You can Improve Your Home Security

In today’s day and age, you can never be too careful when it comes to home security. Even if crime isn’t necessarily on the rise in your local city, it’s always wise to pay attention to the old cliché – better to be safe than sorry. Take a look at these 4 key ways that you can boost your home security and improve your peace of mind.

1) Think like a burglar

One of the easiest ways to prevent your home from a burglar is to think like one. No, sadly, that won’t quite cut it on its own, but it’ll offer you a great perspective on which ways they might try to gain entry to your property.

Do you have a window at the rear of your home with a loose latch? Has your porch light been out for some time now? Is your burglar alarm functioning correctly? Fully functioning, good-quality house alarms are one of the best deterrents and ensure that you are alerted day or night should the need arise. By thinking like the kind of person who might want to break into your home, you’ll serve to protect yourself against it.

2) Keep it locked down

It’s understandable – we’ve all come back from work or the store one day to find out that we’ve forgotten to shut a window or maybe even lock the front door.

The thing is, it only takes once for an opportunistic burglar to saunter past your property and take the chance. By keeping all of your doors and windows locked down when you leave in the morning – then double-checking before you go to bed – you’ll be able to boost your home security and reduce the chances of a budding burglar breaking into your home. Making use of double-glazed windows can really add to your property’s security in London to protect you and your family and reduce the risk of being a victim of crime.

If you’ve recently moved houses too, make a point of getting the locks changed by a professional locksmith like this locksmith in Baltimore, or a similar locksmith in your area. Although unlikely, you can never be sure who might have managed to get their hands on a set of your keys.

3) Keep lights on a timer when away from home

Going away for the weekend? If so, it’s well worth spending on a set of auto-timers for your wall sockets. By plugging your lamps into these, you’ll be able to ensure that your property is lit up when it’s dark, dissuading any burglars from investigating further.

If you’ve got a bit of extra cash to splash, there are hubs produced by companies such as Phillips that you can control via your phone and set to automatically turn on when the lighting outside dips below a certain level. Pretty cool stuff.

4) Install responsive exterior lighting

Even if you live out in the sticks, installing responsive, motion-activated lighting is a smart idea. This way, not only will you notice when someone is walking around the outside of your home, but you’ll also be able to deter them by doing so.

You can pick up a set of motion-activated bulbs at minimal expense to yourself, so they’re definitely a sensible investment that’ll leave your home security stronger.

Also, as an added security measure, you might think of installing an alarm system (alarmanlagen if you’re from Germany). Modern alarm systems use sensors to detect when someone enters the area without permission. They can also be programmed to send an alarm signal if a door or window is opened unexpectedly. Some alarm systems even feature cameras that allow users to view live footage of their surroundings on a smartphone or tablet.

Additionally, many alarms include motion detectors which send out an alert if there is movement inside the building when it’s supposed to be empty.

Follow these simple home security tips and tricks, and your property will be safer in no time.

  1. Awesome post! Keeping everything locked up is certainly a great tip. Another great thing to do is installing a security system, especially one that you can monitor from your smartphone can be extremely helpful. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I really like your tip about having your locks changed by a professional if you’ve moved into a new house. My husband and I are hoping to buy our first home soon. I never considered that there might be spare keys out there. Having a professional install new locks seems like a great way of securing your home.

  3. To add to what you said about keeping your place locked down it it’s also a good idea to have your locks checked at least ever 5 years.

We once moved into a new place and the looks looked ok. But after a year we had issues. Luckily my husband is a locksmith and we replaced everything quite fast but it would have been as easy as getting a locksmith out to check on everything if he was not a locksmith. We have had friends who didn’t listen to us about this and they had a break-in 🙁
