A Unique Kind of Vanity
Having two teenage daughters it has always been a struggle to keep our guest bathroom clean. At any given time you can walk into the bathroom and find hair straighteners and makeup all over the vanity. I looked into buying a vanity for both of them, but the cost of a vanity was not in our budget. I made my 14-year-old a one of a kind vanity for under $30.00. How you ask by shopping thrift stores and reusing some items I already had. Read further on how I made a vanity from these items.
A hard suitcase
A stool
Scraps of Fabric
One Mirror
Spray Paint
Hot Glue gun and glue sticks
and plastic baskets of different sizes.
Ok here is how I started. I went to my local Goodwill looking for some more pillows to make new pillows from and hit on several items. I am showcase 2 of the items here and will have more of my crafts in the next few days.
I paid $8.00 for this hard suitcase.
Ugly right, what a puke color of green. Then I found this stool for $7.00
We are not pool players, but I thought both of these items had possibilities. I first started by spray painting both of these items black.
Here is the suitcase after it was spray painted. Now the stool
Hard to tell it had pool cues and pool balls on it huh? I paid around $5.00 for the black spray paint. But wait I wasn’t through painting yet.
I placed a piece of scrap lace over the suitcase and painted through the holes of the lace. Mikaela chooses the color purple for this. We paid $3.00 for the purple paint.
Check out the unique design it made.
Cool, right I loved the way it looked. So the outside is done, but Mikaela wanted a contrasting lining for the inside.
So equipped with a glue gun and fabric that she picked from my craft stash we both went to work on the inside. She picked a pink and green print as the inside liner. She used two different fabrics for the inside. Here she is applying hot glue while I put the fabric in place.
Now for the bottom piece. For this one, she chose a pink polka dot pattern that went well with the pink print.
Here is what the finished lining looked like. All the fabric that we used were leftover scraps from projects that we had done. So we spent $0.00 on this part of the project.
Next step was to attach the suitcase onto the stool. We used screws going through the suitcase into the stool. Then we put in the plastic bins.
Here Mikaela is pulling apart the little containers. I bought these at Big Lots for $4.80. I bought 7 of these plastic containers of different sizes. We played around with them getting them placed how she wanted them.
Here is what it looks like in the corner of her room. This is what it looks like closed. Then you open it up and see this.
Makeup in her little bins.
And don’t forget every teenager needs a mirror. I got this one free.
So to sum up the total cost of this Vanity
Suitcase = $8.00
Stool = $7.00
Black Spray Paint= $5.00 for three cans
Lace= Free scrap
Purple Spray Paint = $3.00
Fabric= Free from leftover project
Glue sticks= Free had some on hand
Plastic bins= $4.80
Mirror= Free
Total Cost= $27.80
satisfaction of working with my daughter on this project = PRICELESS
I love how I was able to involve 2 of my daughters in this project. Mikaela was hands on creating this vanity for her room, and Gracie was the photographer when we were adding the lining in.
So what have you given a new life and purpose to lately?
